Stroll through the former suburb and discover a district in which the old structures of a working-class and artisan district are combined with the splendor of the upper middle classes. This contrast gives the 4th district a special charm. In the Freihausviertel between Schleifmühlgasse and Kettenbrückengasse, a colorful mix of galleries, boutiques, pubs and trendy bars have settled in recent years, giving this neighborhood its very special flair.
Our path leads past houses and memorial plaques of famous composers and other Viennese who have played an important role in history – often unintentionally. We stroll through small alleyways, peek into backyards and visit stores that are a little different. A little history and even more stories, from Mizzi Kaspar to Mr. Ettenreich.
A tour of the 4th district should include a visit to the Naschmarkt, where the Viennese buy their Blunzen, sauerkraut and Muskatrenetten, and where France meets the Balkans.
After a glass of wine, you might feel like ending the evening in the Grätzl.
